Reflection

What do I cling to?

The Gospel this week challenges us to let go of all that is not of God. It is easy to limit that to our physical possessions but it entails more than that. It asks us to release all the things that we hold on to for security, identity and status. It challenges us to move beyond out beyond our comfort level.

In the times of Jesus, security was tenuous. Debtors could find themselves in prison until they could pay their debts. Widows often found themselves at the mercy of the charity of others. They had little options for supporting themselves. In times of scarcity, it must have been frightening to know that others were trying to save what they had rather than sharing it with those who had less.

Our own economic realities remind us of that reality. Families we know have lost homes, jobs and struggle to meet their fiscal obligations. How do we respond to such need? Jesus asks us if we trust enough to give not of our excess but our substance. Do we believe that God blesses our generosity?
